2025-W01 - offer, decision, and negotiation

Well since the last hello, I haven't prioritized expressing myself through writing in public. Again, it was just words and no action - I postponed it, falling back into the pattern of letting draft posts gather dust. I'll examine this issue in depth later.

Starting fresh again this time Inspired by my friend, I'm starting a series of weekly learning to do what I like: documenting and sharing experiences.

Here's a short review of week 01, 2025. This week was eventful with three big first-time experiences:

Receiving First Full-Time Role

Completed a 6-month internship and received a full-time Product Designer offer from the same company (Beyond Tax, an early-stage startup). Kind of a divine moment as I received the offer on my dad's retirement day.

Applying Decision-Making Lessons

This was a major decision related to work - either take the offer to work with a team with mutual trust or look for a different opportunity.

I'm grateful that last year I read Annie Duke's "How to Decide" and Richard P. Rumelt's "Good Strategy Bad Strategy" to get better at decision making. Lessons from both books proved invaluable in this moment of need.

Inspired by Maggie Appleton's tweet, I created a decision framework in obsidian from my notes to guide this choice. Discussions with friends who faced similar situations helped during this process of change and decision-making.

I chose to accept the offer as jumping into the unknown and breaking the momentum didn't make sense right now. There was a big risk of consuming both time and money. Right now, my main focus is on building projects and improving skills.

Trying Formal Negotiation

I tried to negotiate compensation as I was hoping for slightly more, but I failed, lol. Happy that I at least tried and didn't shy away. I definitely need more experience here.

The only person who can negotiate is the person who can walk away from the negotiation table

I learned,

I also played 4 games of football this week - it was fun playing in winter evenings and getting closer to heaven, nowadays we can only play during the holiday seasons as most everyone lives elsewhere. I'm a total beginner, noob, and anga banga player got no game and mostly play as goalkeeper and defence. Seeing the gap in skills and getting killed by goals. Hope to improve my skills slowly.

Right now, Fuzzybrain - there's some unease about not having a rough learning plan to follow for things to learn and document. I'm fully driven by the 2 projects I have - I'll share more on this later.

See you next week.
